REVIEW: Earth's Crude Gravities

The last time I heard Patrick Friesen read, two or three years ago, was outside the Vancouver Public Library, at the Word on the Street, and my skin is still tingling, my breath still caught, from sucking it in as he read his poem about the blue-eyed corpse in the street. That must have been at least two published volumes ago, but there are more blue eyes and the breath of death in Earth's Crude Gravities.

As the title suggests, these poems continue Friesen's poetic interest in the struggle between the gravities, the one that says you have to do this, be this, in order to go to heaven, and the one, many-tentacled, sirening us towards Earth and its dark side...
