Review in the Vancouver Sun

Exciting Adventure Teaches About Nature, The Vancouver Sun, November 8, 1997

Jason and the Sea Otter, released again, this time in softcover, is a charming book about the relationship between a young Nootka boy and a sea otter. Jason is thrilled when he discovers the sea otter, and he comes to watch it every day. Then the sea otter does something for Jason that he will never forget.

Paul Montpellier, who illustrated the book, has done a wonderful job. He has painted life on the west coast in an array of beautiful colours ranging from the bright blood red of some of Jason's clothes to the grey of the sand being bathed in the afternoon by the gentle blue-green waves. The sea otter is furry and cute and Jason is portrayed as a young, inquisitive boy with large brown eyes. The book would be enjoyed by many children, especially those from the age of five to the age of eight.

It is a calming but exciting adventure with Jason in his canoe as he watches the wildlife on the rocks, in the water, and on the beaches. This book is enough to awaken an interest in wildlife in any child who reads it.
