Mike McCardell’s Book Captures the Spirit of BC

Posted: January 28, 2008

Celebrate White Rock’s Spirit of BC Week with news broadcaster and author Mike McCardell. McCardell will be giving a talk from his bestselling book, The Blue Flames that Keep Us Warm, at the White Rock Library, 15342 Buena Vista in White Rock, on Monday, February 11 at 7:00pm.

One of Western Canada’s most beloved media personalities, Mike McCardell has spent the last 32 years on Global BC’s News Hour showing that the truly important events that make our world go round are not the wars and murders that grab the headlines, but the little things that happen on back streets to people we never hear about. The Blue Flames that Keep Us Warm is his latest attempt to gather his favourite stories in one place.

Here is the story behind all those official signs in North Vancouver that say “Deer Crossing” but show a rhino, or say “Grrr. Bark. Wooof! Pick up after your dog,” all the handiwork of Cameron Stewart, the world’s most original municipal sign guy. Here is “Captain” Bruce Hutchinson, who turned his apartment into a live-in model of a navy submarine, complete with rigging, radar and cannon. Here is Dorothy Walton, “the Valentine Lady,” who personally made hundreds of valentines each year—and hand delivered them to the neighbours who lived in the apartment buildings beside her.

Now these same stories that warm readers’ hearts will also help children who have special needs. Until February 28, 2008, partial proceeds from each sale of The Blue Flames that Keep Us Warm will be donated to Variety—The Children’s Charity. Global BC and Harbour Publishing have joined forces to support the fundraising drive. Variety—The Children’s Charity raises funds and disburses grants to individuals and families throughout the province. With over 1,000 requests every year, Variety helps pay for medical emergencies, therapies, specialized equipment and drug prescriptions.

This event is part of the City of White Rock’s Spirit of BC Week, February 8-16, and is also sponsored by The Fraser Valley Regional Library and the White Rock Library. Books will be available for sale at the reading through Black Bond Books. For more information about the event, please phone the White Rock Library at 604-541-2201.
