Renowned Chefs and Fans Alike Celebrate James Barber This Weekend

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Christina Burridge & Special Guests celebrate James Barber with the launch of The Genius of James Barber: His Best Recipes. Join Christina for a special book event at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks (The Main Shop, 1740 West 2nd Avenue) on Sunday, December 7th at 3:00pm.

This book includes over 300 of James’ best recipes and includes directions on how to make everything from Sweet Pear Omelettes to Lamb with Coffee. Also included are remembrances and recipes from some of Barber’s most distinguished fans including Umberto Menghi, Karen Barnaby, Hidekazu Tojo and Vikram Vij.

James Barber was born in the United Kingdom in 1923 and eventually settled in British Columbia with a desire to pursue a career in food. He worked as an engineer before becoming a food critic at the Vancouver Sun, which developed his interests in writing and cooking. James wrote 11 cookbooks and starred in his own cooking show, “The Urban Peasant” on CBC for 10 years. James retired to his farm in the Cowichan Valley with his long-time partner Christina Burridge. The couple were married soon after, following a 20-year courtship. Barber passed away in November 2007 at the age of 84.
