Dr. Barry Gough to Speak in Bellingham

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

On Saturday, April 4th at 7:00pm, Barry Gough will be presenting a talk on his book, Fortune’s a River: The Collision of Empires in Northwest America, at Village Books (1200 11th Street, Bellingham). In this major historical work, noted historian Barry Gough re-examines how British Columbia became British and how Oregon, Washington and Alaska became American. Gough studies the players in this territorial drama, bringing them to life and vividly recounting their hardships and struggles. This tale is one of internal dynamics and international rivalries played out on the magnificent backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, and a wild west adventure of men who were driven by profit to shape the history of the West Coast.

Dr. Barry Gough headed the Canadian Studies Program and was Associate Director of the Northwest Archives Center at Western Washington University. He then went on to become the founding director of Canadian Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. As the author of ten previous books, he has been called the “foremost expositor of BC nautical history.” He lives in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife Marilyn.
