Janet Love Morrison Visits Silver Star Mountain Resort

Friday, July 17, 2009

Janet Love Morrison will be signing copies of her new book at the Silver Star Mountain Resort, on Saturday, August 15th at 12:00-2:00pm. The Crazy Canucks: Canada’s Legendary Ski Team won Vancouver’s One Book, One Vancouver, as a celebration of the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics.

In the early 1970s no non-European had ever won a Men’s World Cup Downhill event and nobody expected this to change. Then in 1975 Canadian Ken Read won at the Val d’Isère and the Canadian boys began appearing on the World Cup podiums with increasing regularity. It didn’t take long for journalists to start calling them the “Kamikaze Canadians,” but the name that stuck was the “Crazy Canucks.”

The courage and high spirits of the young Canadian racers—Jim Hunter, Dave Murray, Dave Irwin, Ken Read and Steve Podborski—made them favourites across Europe, where Swiss or Austrian or French fans would rather see Canadians win than their old archrivals. As Canadians approach the 2010 Olympics with high hopes for their ski teams, The Crazy Canucks provides a timely look at a most distinguished—and colourful—chapter in our nation’s sporting history.

Janet Love Morrison travelled extensively across Canada, Europe and South America to research this book. She interviewed over seventy people: competitors such as Franz Klammer, coaches, family members, journalists, trainers and many others. In 1997 she worked with Summerhill Productions on the CBC’s Life and Times: These Crazy Canucks. Love Morrison lives in North Vancouver, BC.
