Legendary Bandleader Dal Richards in Victoria

October 8, 2009

Meet legendary bandleader Dal Richards and co-author Jim Taylor at a book signing for the newly released autobiography One More Time!: The Dal Richards Story. They will be appearing at Munro’s Books, 1108 Government Street in Victoria, on Saturday, October 17 at 2:00pm

One More Time! details Dal’s fascinating life story, from his beginnings as a clarinet player in the Kitsilano Boys Band to leading the Dal Richards Orchestra in nightly gigs at the Panorama Roof through to his memories of the stars he met and befriended in the days when Vancouver’s nightclub scene rivalled San Francisco’s, and Hollywood’s big-name performers made it a regular tour stop.

This story takes a loving look back at the gigs, laughter and musical misadventures of a time when the songs came from records and radio instead of CDs and iPods. It was a time when the music business was rich with characters like “Two-for Joe,” who ran the spotlight at the Cave and frequently took it off the performer to turn it on his girlfriend lest she was cavorting with a new beau; and the one-hit wonder singer and piano player who had to hide between performances because a Mafia hit man was looking to turn out his lights.

On his 90th birthday Dal sold out the Orpheum Theatre; in 2009 he released a new CD; and when the Dal Richards Orchestra launches into In the Mood, graceful dancers are set swinging, just as their parents, and even grandparents, have done—through seven decades of keeping the music alive.

Dal Richards is a legendary musician and bandleader who was an integral part of the big band era in Western Canada. Richards, or “Doctor Swing” as he is affectionately known, is the recipient of numerous honours and accolades including the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada. He hosts a weekly radio show, Dal’s Place, on AM650 radio. Co-author Jim Taylor has produced some 7,500 sports columns, three times as many radio shows and thirteen books. His sports writing has earned him membership in the CFL and BC Sports Halls of Fame and a lifetime achievement award from Sports Media Canada. He is the author of Goin’ Deep: The Life and Times of a CFL Quarterback (with Matt Dunigan) and “Hello, Sweetheart? Gimmie Rewrite!”: My Life in the Wonderful World of Sports.
