Discover the Wild Side of Vancouver Islandís Pacific Rim

May 7, 2010

Take a walk on the wild side with author and photographer Jacqueline Windh. Windh will be giving two spectacular slide show presentations based on her guidebook, The Wild Side Guide to the Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim. On Thursday, May 20 at 7:30pm she will be at the West Vancouver Memorial Library (1950 Marine Drive), and on Wednesday, May 26 at 7:30pm she will be appearing in Port Alberni at the Hospitality Inn (Aerosmith Room, 3835 Redford Street). Admission to both events is free.

At the presentations you will learn more about the Pacific Rim. Located on Vancouver Island’s wild west coast, the region--with its picturesque coastal villages and expansive wave-washed sand beaches--has become one of Canada’s top tourist destinations, receiving over one million visitors each year.

As recently as the 1950s, the Pacific Rim was almost inaccessible to all but the most determined travellers, who had to find their way by boat. The villages of Bamfield, Tofino and Ucluelet still retain their maritime flavour and offer locals and visitors many ocean experiences such as whale watching, kayaking, fishing and surfing. Port Alberni is also one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Once considered only a mill and logging town, it now attracts hundreds of thousands of vacationers every year by offering towering rainforests, a thriving arts community and many of the same outdoor recreation activities as Tofino.

Windh, who is a long-time Island resident and wilderness traveller, will not only talk about what to do and the best places to visit, but will show beautiful photos that explore the wildlife and scenery of the Pacific Rim and share stories about the area’s rich history and culture. It is the perfect presentation for those thinking about visiting the Pacific Rim or for those armchair travellers who like to dream about future vacation spots.

Jacqueline Windh is a photojournalist, geologist and outdoorswoman who has published her images and articles in many leading magazines. She is the author of a newly revised second edition of The Wild Side Guide to Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim and The Wild Edge: Clayoquot, Long Beach and Barkley Sound. She lives in Tofino, BC.

The West Vancouver event is sponsored by the West Vancouver Memorial Library and the Port Alberni event is sponsored by Alberni Valley Tourism. For more information about either event, please email info@harbourpublishing.com.
