Congratulations to Elsie Hulsizer

Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 3:03pm

Congratulations to  Elsie Hulsizer who has won honourable mention in the 2010 ForeWord Book of the Year Awards in the Travel Essays category for her book, Glaciers, Bears and Totems: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska. The Foreword Book of the Year Awards are given to the best independently published books, as selected by librarians and booksellers who are experts in the categories they are judging.

Glaciers, Bears and Totems is a rich book of adventure travel that is as valuable for its reading fun as for its travel information. It was written during the three summers that Elsie spent sailing to the towering fjords, immaculate glaciers, throwback fishing villages and overexposed tourist traps of America’s largest state.

Elsie Hulsizer is an environmental professional with a degree in oceanography. She also has a certificate in fine art photography from the Photographic Center Northwest and has exhibited her art in various galleries including Seattle’s Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center. The Hulsizers have sailed extensively up and down the West Coast. Between sailing adventures on the Osprey, she serves on the Washington State Board of Pilotage Commissioners which licenses the pilots who guide ships on Puget Sound, and on the Board of Trustees for Seattle’s Center for Wooden Boats.
