Author and journalist Stephen Hume has just been nominated for the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize for adult literature for his most recent collection of essays, A Walk with the Rainy Sisters: In Praise of British Columbia's Places. Caitlin Press title Old Lives: In the Chilcotin Backcountry, by John Schreiber, was also shortlisted.

The City of Victoria Butler Book Prize was founded in 2004. It comes with a $5,000 prize and is awarded each year to a resident of the Captial Region with a book of fiction, literary non-fiction or poetry of outstanding literary merit.

The other finalists for this award are Carla Funk for apologetic (Turnstone Press), Jack Hodgins for The Master of Happy Endings (Thomas Allen Publishers) and Sylvia Olsen for Working with Wool: A Coast Salish Legacy and the Cowichan Sweater (Sono Nis). The winner will be announced at an awards gala to be held at the Union Club of Victoria on October 12, 2011. Tickets to the gala are $15 and are available now at Bolen Books, Munro’s Books, Ivy’s Bookshop and the Victoria Book Prize Society (250-592-1181).
