Shane Rhodes is Shortlisted for the Ottawa Book Award for Fiction
Monday, November 25, 2013 at 9:17am
Congratulations to Nightwood Editions author Shane Rhodes who has been shortlisted for the 2012 Ottawa Book Awards for his book of poems, Err. Rhodes is the only poet nominated in the fiction category—a testament to the power of his poetry.
Erris award-winning poet Rhodes’ fourth collection, and his poems are as lively with invention as ever. Here are poems centred around liquor, AIDS, safe sex, not-so-safe sex, gambling, war and death. Yet Rhodes approaches these subjects with a lyrical word-based wit that refuses melodrama in favour of fun, playful and intelligent commentary that will keep you reading through to the last twisted experiment. From a master of alliteration, allusion, rhyme and rhythm, Err will make you laugh at inappropriate subjects, enjoy yourself, think hard, and
Rhodes’ fellow nominees for the fiction prize include Alan Cumyn for Tilt (Groundwood Books), Jamieson Findlay for The Summer of Permanent Wants (Doubleday Canada), Elizabeth Hay for Alone in the Classroom (McClelland & Stewart) and Frances Itani for Requiem (HarperCollins Publishers). The Awards will be presented on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:00 pm at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Ottawa (245 Centrum Boulevard in Orleans).
