Don Pepper Launches 'Fishing the Coast' in Vancouver

Here, finally, is a book about commercial salmon fishing through the eyes of a commercial fisherman! Join Don Pepper, whose life on the water as a fisherman spanned over fifty years, as he launches his new book, Fishing the Coast: A Life on the Water, with a slideshow, talk and book signing at the Vancouver Maritime Museum (1905 Ogden Avenue, Vancouver) on Thursday, May 9 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Sandy Pool Shortlisted for an Alberta Book Award

Nightwood Editions author Sandy Pool has been nominated for the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry for Undark, An Oratorio.

The Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry is one of nine Alberta Literary Awards, administered by the Writers Guild of Alberta, which recognize and celebrate the highest standards of literary excellence from Alberta authors.

Sandy Pool is a multidisciplinary artist and recently appointed Killam scholar. She holds a degree in Theatre Performance and English from the University of Toronto, as well as a M.F.A in Creative Writing from the University Guelph. Currently, she is a doctoral student in Canadian Literature and Poetics at the University of Calgary, where she is the editor of Dandelion magazine. Sandy’s first book, Exploding into Night, was nominated for the 2010 Governor General’s Award for Poetry. She is also a librettist and voice work artist.

Undark, Pool’s luminous volume of poetry, is a dramatic elegy and poetic inquisition written in seven distinct voices. Drawing from the historical record of the ‘radium women’ who painted glow-in-the-dark numbers on watch dials in the early 1900s, the work urges us to engage deeply with questions of time and women’s history. ...

Roy Henry Vickers and Robert Budd Launch Book at One-Day-Only Vancouver Art Show

Roy Henry Vickers, one of Canada’s most-lauded artists, is unveiling his largest-ever collection of new prints at a public gallery and storytelling event on Saturday, April 6, 2013, from 10:30am to 4pm, at Vancouver’s iconic Waterfall Building. The introduction and storytelling will begin at 11am.

The creations on display were inspired by Raven Brings the Light—a highly-anticipated book co-authored by Robert Budd—telling the legend of how Raven brought light to the world. Advance copies of the books will be available at the launch.

It’s been a significant year for Harbour Publishing! Hot on the heels of acquiring the publishing imprint Douglas & McIntyre just last month, we are pleased to announce that the BC Book Prizes shortlist has been released and we have numerous nominations, not only for our Harbour titles, but also for the Douglas & McIntyre list.

The Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award category, which is presented to the publisher and author of the best book in terms of public appeal, initiative, design, production and content, includes the following nominations: British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas by Derek Hayes (Douglas & McIntyre), Bruno and the Beach: The Beachcombers at 40, by Marc Strange and Jackson Davies (Harbour Publishing), Exploring Vancouver: The Architectural Guide, by Harold Kalman and Robin Ward (Douglas & McIntyre), and Trucking in British Columbia: An Illustrated History, by Daniel Francis (Harbour Publishing).

We also received a number of nominations in the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Book Prize category, for Harbour's Bruno and the Beach: The Beachcombers at 40, as well as Douglas & McIntyre's British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas and Undesirables: White Canada and the Komagata Maru – An Illustrated History, by Ali Kazimi. The Roderick Haig Brown Regional Book Prize is awarded to the author whose book contributes most to the enjoyment and understanding of British Columbia.

The press also received a nomination for the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize--which goes to the best original non-fiction literary work written by a BC author--for The Art of the Impossible: Dave Barrett and the NDP in Power, 1972-1975, by Geoff Meggs and Rod Mickleburgh (Harbour Publishing).

The BC Book Prizes is awarded annually in seven categories, with the intent to celebrate the best writing and publishing in the province. The awards carry a cash prize of $2000 plus a certificate. The winners of the BC Book Prizes will be announced in Victoria at an awards gala at Government House, on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Congratulations to all!

Rachel Rose's latest book, Song and Spectacle, has won the prestigious Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry, presented by the Publishing Triangle. This award is given to a poet in Canada or the United States and honours Lorde, an American poet, essayist, librarian and teacher. DOUGLAS & MCINTYRE FORGES ALLIANCE WITH HARBOUR PUBLISHING

Douglas & McIntyre, the original imprint of British Columbia’s long-time flagship book publisher, will live to see another day thanks to a new alliance with Harbour Publishing, another long-established British Columbian publisher. Harbour owners Howard and Mary White reached an agreement to purchase assets associated with the famous imprint from its former owner, D&M Publishers Inc.

D&M Publishers Inc. published under two imprints, Douglas & McIntyre and Greystone Books. During reorganization the imprints have been separated and sold as individual entities. The Douglas & McIntyre imprint dates back to 1971 when the original publishing company was co-founded by Jim Douglas and Scott McIntyre. The Douglas & McIntyre list is made up of some 500 titles including the Giller-Prize-winning novel The Sentimentalists by Johanna Skribsrud; the CBC Canada Reads contender Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese; British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas by Derek Hayes and works by such eminent Canadian authors as Emily Carr, Bill Reid, Wayson Choy, Doris Shadbolt, Wade Davis, Bill Richardson, Douglas Coupland, Will Ferguson and others.

The Whites plan to operate Douglas & McIntyre as a separate company with its own editorial direction, maintaining the press’s focus on First Nations, art, fiction and books directed at the national and international market. All Douglas & McIntyre titles will continue to be distributed by Harper Collins in Canada with no interruption of service.

White had been “concerned, like everyone else,” when D&M filed for creditor protection last year. “I have been admiring Douglas & McIntyre since we started publishing books together 40 years ago,” White says. “I just felt if there was a role for Harbour to play in keeping that great program going, we had to do it.”

Harbour has successfully partnered with other presses in past, including Nightwood Editions, Caitlin Press, Bluefield Books and Lost Moose Books. None of these was the size of D&M and White doesn’t underestimate the scale of the new undertaking.

“We plan to take it one step at a time,” he says, adding that he will be contacting D&M authors over the next few days and urging them “to work with us to make sure this great Canadian publishing tradition carries on for years to come.”

Howard White Shortlisted for the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature

Howard White has been shortlisted for the 2012 George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature for his book, A Hard Man to Beat: The Story of Bill White, Labour Leader, Shipyard Worker, Raconteur.

The George Ryga Award is awarded to a British Columbia author who has achieved an outstanding degree of social awareness in a newly published book, and is administered by Okanagan College. Past winners include Stephen Galloway, author of The Cellist of Sarajevo and Larry Campbell, Neil Boyd and Lori Culbert for their book, A Thousand Dreams: Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and the Fight for Its Future. Other books shortlisted for the 2012 award are Michael Christie’s The Beggars Garden (Harper Collins) and Joel Bakan’s Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children (Penguin). The winner will be announced in March of 2013 and the award will be presented at a ceremony in Kelowna, BC on Saturday, March 23 during Okanagan College’s literary festival Word Ruckus.
